Here are some great tips for choosing the right flowers for your wedding!

Choosing the perfect flowers for your wedding is an important task that may seem a tad overwhelming. There are literally thousands of different flowers choices, and the flowers that you ultimately choose can have a huge influence on the feel and look of your big day. Worry not, we’ve compiled some great tips to make choosing the perfect arrangements a walk in the park.

Check out the flowers that are in season when you are getting married

This is one of the biggest tips we can give soon to be married couples. Some flowers are seasonal, and they may not be available at the time of year that you are getting married. If you have your heart set on a particular flower and it isn’t in season, that doesn’t mean you can’t have it at all, it may just mean that they may have to be imported from overseas. One example of a seasonal flower that is hugely popular is the peony. Importing them can be expensive, and the quality is never guaranteed, so if you would consider it, talk to your wedding florist about alternatives that look similar to peonies and are in season.

If you check out which flowers are in season when you are due to get married, you can then narrow down your favourite options or alternatively, you can take screenshots of flowers that you’ve seen on the internet, or snippets from magazines to show to your florist. They’ll be able to tell you whether they are suitable given the season or not. Speaking of inspiration, that brings us to our next tip.

Gather inspiration

If you’ve found some flower styles that you like in bridal magazines, online or photos of someone’s else’s big day, take these to your florist. They will appreciate this as they can get an idea of exactly what you are after. They can then tweak or add anything else that you want to include. This ensures you are totally elated with the end result. Which is what we all want, right?

Consider more foliage than flowers

If you’ve sat down and crunched the numbers for your wedding, you’d know that things add up and fast! One way to reduce the cost is by incorporating more foliage in place of flowers. You can still have flowers but by adding more foliage, you can cut down the cost. When you think about bridal arrangements, tables flowers, arbour etc, it can all add up and you can still create a stunning array of arrangements with more greenery.

Think about which tones and flowers will work best for the theme of your wedding

You want to create cohesion with your wedding day. Having mix-match colours and themes can be confusing and detract from your special day. Your flowers should complement the rest of your wedding style. A good way to get a visual idea of how everything will look is by creating a vision board. Using cutouts from magazines, screenshots that have been printed and fabric samples can give you perspective when they are all together. Rather than trying to visualise it in your head, you can see it right in front of you.

Ask for a sample of your arrangements

Much like a make-up trial or a cake testing, asking for a sample or mock-up of your flower arrangement can give you an idea of how they look and feel in real life. This can be greatly beneficial if you decide you want to change anything before the big day.

Think about textures

Often people go straight to the colour and type of flower however, incorporating different textures can take a bouquet and arrangements to the next level. Including different types of flowers that add their own textural element can create depth and dimension to your bouquet. Be open to suggestions, your florist may just have ideas that you and would have never even considered otherwise. They are the professionals, after all.

Determine your budget

Working out how much you can spend early on can help you discover which flowers and greenery options will work for your budget.

You can then establish whether you can afford your dream flowers or perhaps you have to incorporate other elements or cut back on some aspects. You can work out what you need to prioritise regarding flowers and what isn’t so important. Your floral stylist can offer more affordable yet similar options if you are finding that your original ideas aren’t suited to your budget.

Find a florist that has a good reputation and does quality work

When hiring any vendor for your wedding, you must ensure they are a reputable company and check out their work before you commit to hiring them. Choosing someone without doing your research first can lead to huge disappointment come your big day. It can also help to choose someone that has done bouquets that are similar to what you want. This can give you confidence that they will do a quality job. You should also have a look at the floral stylist’s reviews for unbiased feedback from previous clients of theirs.
