How to Decide on a Wedding Photographer

Your wedding is coming up and it probably feels like there is so much to plan! With all this preparation, you’ll want to make sure to have a real professional to capture this special event. Now that the time is fast approaching, how do you book the right person?  First, some things to keep in mind before you start looking.

  1. What is your budget? There is a range for photography services and depending on what your budget is, you’ll have options. Some of those options will be discussed further in the article.
  2. What exactly do you want the photographer to capture? Are you doing engagement photos first? What about a bridal shoot? What events will you need the photographer present for? These questions are good to think about before contacting photographers.

Once you’ve answered the questions above, you’re ready to look at options. Not everyone’s budget, taste, and preferences are the same and you may find that more than one option below seems like a good fit. If that is the case, go with what you think will best suit your budget and plans.

Option 1: Family Member, Friend, or a Referred Freelancer.

This option tends to be the most budget friendly, with some exceptions. If this person you already know, or was referred to you is a freelancer, then they’ll probably have less experience than a professional. They may be a hobbyist with some skills and less experience. However, there are cases where they have real experience and talent. If you are thinking about going this route, a good due diligence would be to ask them to see samples of other weddings and shoots they’ve done. If they have less experience, you may find that you’ll need to direct them more than you would a professional.

Option 2: Local Wedding Photographers

This option will usually cost a little more than a freelancer, but these are local business professionals who specialize in wedding, bridal, and engagement photography like wedding photography Eagle Mountain Utah. If they’ve been around for a while, you’ll be able to view their previous work. They’ll know exactly how to work with you to find out what you’re looking for and take care of the work in the background while you focus on all the other wedding preparations. These photographers typically have a variety of pricing options to suit your needs and they’ll take care of delivering the finished product in a timely manner. If you go this route, just make sure to check customer reviews and view their past work.

Option 3: All-In-One Wedding Planning Packages

This option is very similar to what you’ll get with Option 2 except that the wedding planner you’re working with will be providing (or subcontracting) the photography as part of their services. Pricing in this case can vary but will probably be comparable to what you’ll get with Option 2. If you’re thinking of going this route, compare pricing with some local pros, and make sure to check customer reviews, and ask to see previous work.

Having beautiful photos that do justice to your wedding is something you’ll be grateful for long after your wedding day. So, pick the option that fits your needs best. Make sure the photographer you choose has all the information they’ll need to produce the results you’re looking for.  If you’re doing an engagement shoot, that’s a great way to get to know the photographer, and for them to get a feel for your taste.
