4 Expenses Maid of Honours Must Anticipate

Weddings are expensive affairs, as any bride or groom to be will tell you. They save up for months or even years to have the perfect fairy-tale wedding. The dress, the wedding arrangements, the cake, the food, and all that goes into a wedding are going to cost them a lot of money.

When your bestie asks you to be the maid of honour and you accept, you are actually taking on a huge responsibility that cannot be taken lightly. Apart from the fact that being the maid of honour means staying by the side of the bride and helping her out with minor crises that sprout up before the wedding, it also means that there are going to be several expenses that you are going to have to shoulder.

It is always best to be aware of the expenses that may arise while fulfilling your maid of honour duties. You need to sit with the bride and talk about her expectations, and also explain the limitations, if any, that you or the bridal party might have. Plan the pre-wedding activities based making sure to balance them between what the bride wants, and what the bridal party can afford, so that no one is overwhelmed by the expenses and everyone has a good time.

Here are some expenses that you should anticipate as maid of honour:

  1. Altering the bridesmaid dress: Your friend will pick out a dress out for you, based on the vision she has for the wedding. However, while trying to coordinate dresses for several bridesmaids, along with her own dress, there are bound to be some things that may not completely satisfy your expectations. The most likely issue is going to be that the dress is not a perfect fit for you. In such cases, be ready to shell out a small amount of money for alterations to be done so that it fits you better. Work closely with the dress maker at the beginning stages to make sure that your out-of-pocket expenses can be minimised.
  2. Hens night party: This is of course one of the most important responsibilities of the maid of honour. The hens party is completely your responsibility and it has to be memorable and fun for the bride and the other friends gathered there. However, the expenses are something that will have to come out of your pocket, and those of your friends who are attending. Plan well ahead to make the most of your resources, and discuss with your friends on how to plan a fun night without emptying everyone’s purses. There is nothing wrong with opting for a cheap hens night, which still has all the elements that make it a night to remember.
  3. Hair & Makeup, and Attire: the bride is going to expect all her friends and family to look fabulous on her big day, but that doesn’t mean that she is going to be doling out money for the same. You need to set aside some money for getting your hair and makeup done and getting some new clothes, not only for the wedding day, but for also the other pre-wedding days like the rehearsal dinner, the hens night, and any other events the bride may have planned. After all, you need to look fantastic, standing next to the bride in all the photos. Be sure not to overshadow the bride, of course!
  4. Traveling and accommodation expenses: if your bestie has planned a destination wedding, chances are that you are going to have to get yourself there. Be ready for traveling and accommodation expenses. The same goes for the hens night party if it is to be held at another location. These expenses tend to add up, so it is wise to have a certain amount put aside for the same.
